Birthday Bash Masterclass: Names in the Landscape: Scotland and the Northern Isles

This masterclass examines how place‑names preserve evidence for language, settlement, and cultural interaction across Scotland and the Northern Isles. Drawing on P‑Celtic, Gaelic, Old English and Old Norse material, the session explores how names were formed, how they adapted across languages, and what they reveal about identity and landscape use in the medieval period. Using historical maps and case studies, we consider how place‑names can be used as sources for understanding continuity, contact, and change in northern Britain.
