About the Event
Have you ever wondered about the origins of dragons and griffins? We frequently encounter these legendary creatures in movies and novels, but their appearance in ancient cultures remains enigmatic to most. Did they look like anything like their modern portrayals? Who was thought to have created them? What were their roles in mythology? Were they relevant to the daily lives of the average person?
In this Master Class, we will examine the archaeological and textual materials that attest to dragons and griffins in ancient Mesopotamia. Through the study of ancient artifacts (vases, cylinder seals, monuments, wall reliefs in temples and palaces) and texts (myths and incantations), we will dive deep into the ancient Mesopotamian perspectives concerning dragons and griffins and their functions in both the divine and human worlds.
