About the Event
Outside of textbooks, one of the places we run into the most Latin and Greek is in works of science fiction. This reading group will encourage readers to think about how the stories, languages, and motifs from the ancient world influence and are interpreted by modern sci-fi. Students will learn about the history of the genre, reading about robots in Homer and Lucian’s absolutely positively true story about going to the moon. Discussion themes will include the difference between science fiction and mythology, how fictional empires in space reflect the real empires science fiction creators live in, what a Roman utopia might be like, and cool things to name a spaceship.
