About the Event

This Master Class explores the emergence, significance and legacy of the Flavian dynasty in Ancient Roman history and culture. Established by Emperor Vespasian in 69 AD, the Flavians ushered in an era of transformation, resilience, and imperial consolidation following the grisly Year of the Four Emperors in the wake of Nero's suicide. The reign of the Flavians, spanning from Vespasian to his sons Titus and Domitian, marked a pivotal period characterized by military prowess, monumental architecture such as the construction of the Colosseum, and the stabilization of the Roman economy. Vespasian's ambitious project of erecting the Colosseum stands as a testament to their enduring legacy, symbolizing not only their grand architectural vision but also their ability to command vast resources and shape the urban landscape of Rome that still defines the city’s landscape today. Delving into the Flavians illuminates not only the dynamics of rule and power in ancient Rome but also sheds light on broader themes of leadership, succession, and the power of images.
