"What can we learn from ancient tales of monsters?" 

The above are some of the questions we will ask our panel of experts as we discuss ancient monster myths from around the world and how they are relevant today. Moderated by Cassandra May.   

Panelists include:  

Dr. Carla Ionescu: Dr. Ionescu is the founder of the Artemis Research Centre and is one of the leading experts in the worship and ritual of Artemis Ephesia, Dr. Ionescu spends most of her time teaching in the field of Ancient History and Women’s Studies, and/or applying for grants to support her research travels.  

Zylla Black: The founder and personality behind Zylla’s Athenaeum. Zylla Black (she/they) is a YouTuber, writer, and independent academic.  She has multiple higher degrees in ancient studies, and regularly makes videos about ancient world content and education.

Asiatic Society for Social Science Research (ASSSR): A research body that coordinates and serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas and works towards the preservation of monuments and archaeological sources. Representative to join has yet to be announced.

Jessica Johnson, MA: Jessica is an art historically trained Egyptologist with a strong background in archaeology and museums. She received her B.A in Art History from New York University and M.A. in Egyptian Art History and Archaeology and a Graduate Certification in Museum Studies from the University of Memphis. Currently, Jess is a PhD Candidate at UC Berkeley in the Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures department, but she is researching and writing her dissertation at the University of Basel in Switzerland. Her research focuses on tomb decoration, demons and monsters, Egyptian underworld mythology, and literature. She is a specialist in New Kingdom religion/Book of the Dead, Museum Studies, and Digital Humanities.

Martine Diepenbroek: Martine Diepenbroek is a Dutch Classicist and Ancient Historian who works on secret communication in the ancient world. She finished a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Bristol, and now works as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Johannesburg.
