Reading Group: From Soapy Slaughter to Soap Opera

‘X has an affair with y’s wife, y gets revenge in whatever grim way he can, x’s wife retaliates by publicly humiliating y and his wife. Then the super ambitious brother of x gets involved….’ Whilst this may seem more familiar from the modern soap opera, it was also the bread and butter of Greek Tragedy, Greek Comedy, Roman Comedy, and, oh yes, wait, history!

What better lesson do you need that people have not changed. Families are complicated. Come and explore the enduring reality of the complexity of human relationships, from murderous revenge and bathtubs to the intrigue, incest (alleged), and insidious rivalry of the imperial household.
