About the Event
Ancient Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions have preserved the names and birthplaces of dozens, if not hundreds, of royal Maya women. In this presentation, we'll see that, while ancient Maya women were often viewed as wives or mothers first, there are plenty of portrayals of women as important political players in their own right. After briefly discussing ancient Maya literature and how we can read it, we'll view commonalities in women's names and what those names reveal about individuals; explore how titles tied them to their birthplace regardless of where they ended up; and meet a few of the most fascinating women of the ancient Maya world.
Zac Lindsey is a board member of the Institute of Maya Studies and a tour leader for the Maya Exploration Center. His recent research has focused on the risk urbanization poses to small archaeological sites around Merida, Mexico.
This event will be live-streamed on our Facebook, Youtube and…
