About the Event

Ancient Mediterranean art is often associated with marble sculptures, painted vases, frescoes or terracotta figurines. But these are the final products in a long process of artistic production. All art has its roots in the materials that form it. In Antiquity many of these materials were embedded in the environment, creating an intertwined relationship between art and nature. Pausanias’ Description of Greece presents an in-depth journey through the topography of ancient Greece and offers an insight into how ancient societies viewed the nature that surrounded them. In this class, we will use Pausanias as a starting point, as well as delving into other literary sources to explore the ancient environment and how it impacted and inspired the production of art.
