About the Event
We will read a variety of ancient Aesopic Fables translated into English from the Latin work of Phaedrus, whose writings are the oldest complete (ish) surviving collection of Fables written as entertainment literature rather than as reference literature. In modern culture, fables are usually thought of as purely moralistic children's tales, but in ancient Rome they were more like jokes or what we would think of as silly cartoons, and some of these fables included themes that would be inappropriate for an audience under the age of 18 today. I will introduce some of these fables and where readers can look to find more on their own.
