About the Event
This reading group will provide a thorough analysis of the poem Beowulf to understand the text as a reflection of both the Norse and Anglo-Saxon worlds. Here we will identify intersections between different religions and ethnic groups, explore the impact of women in rhetoric, uncover the role of monsters, and explore the epic heroism of the early middle ages. Participants will gain a cultural and historical understanding of Beowulf beyond the context of the poem as a source for the English language. We will explore issues such as identity, politics, nation-making, memory, and gender roles in the early middle ages.
