Birthday Bash Masterclass: Who were the first Vikings?

Everyone associates the start of the Viking Age with an apocalyptic raid on Lindisfarne, dated to the year 793. Long before then, however, the act of raiding and stealing loot was not uncommon. All across the North Sea, evidence is starting to emerge of piratical groups occupying similar 'Viking' roles for many decades, perhaps even centuries, before an attack on Lindisfarne was even an idea. This masterclass will approach the early Viking Age from the perspective of these formative raiding parties, showcasing the evolution of maritime technology that led to the first 'Viking longship', the growth in the size of sea-bandit armies, and the effects these predations had on communities in England, the Low Countries, and beyond.
