How much do we really know about what Vikings believed?

In this Masterclass Dr. Manea will discuss the concept of Old Norse religion, the sources and their limitations, research perspectives, the pantheon and invisible population, magic and sorcery. 

If we wish to develop a broader view of the religious experience and mental landscapes in the late Iron age, and also across the ages, we need to have a critical look at the complexity of Viking religion as well, which is much more than a set of pagan tales and is found at the delightful confluence of literature, archaeology and history. In a long history of use and abuse within various political agendas, Norse myths occupy an important place in today’s popular fantasy culture, yet this has sparked off once again a lot of preconceptions or far-fetched information on the internet which need to be counteracted or completed with more sound academic knowledge. In this Masterclass participants will gain a better understanding of the mental and religious universe of pre-Christian Scandinavia and an enriched sense of cultural diversity through the discovery of an “alien” way of thinking
