About the Event

Focusing on Indigenous Andean Agricultural methods and their resilience to modern climate change, we will explore this dynamic from several perspectives. First, a general overview of Andean high-altitude agricultural methods will be given by discussing landmark anthropological work relating to both terraced and raised field agriculture. Next, specific engineering characteristics of indigenous agricultural infrastructure will be explored through several archaeological case studies of various well-known Andean ruins. The class will then touch on comparative ethnographic studies with other mountainous regions of the world currently impacted by climate change. Before concluding, we will discuss current mitigation and adaptation efforts of governments within the Andes to combat climate change impacts. There will be several opportunities for open group discussion on each topic throughout the class.
