About the Event

Previous participation and previous knowledge are not required.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the Picts and ancient Celtic belief and mythology? Dr. Kelly Kilpatrick's paper challenges traditional modern views and interpretations of this iconography, and through comparison with material and literary evidence from neighbouring ancient and medieval cultures, demonstrates that these figures represent Pictish gods and otherworldly beasts. Other examples of this theme include ancient Celtic and Romano-Celtic religion. The study of Indo-European mythology is very important, particularly as this demonstrates ancient socio-cultural links between many modern peoples. This research reveals a hitherto unrecognised and lost belief system of a people who lived in northern Europe, and provides modern scholars with new evidence. Join us to gain a better understanding of the Picts, their art and culture, and their native and adopted Christian belief systems.
